Educational Services

Throughout my career, I have enjoyed teaching. Happily I have been able to offer educational services in my consulting firm. Please contact me for more information if you are interested in having me speak at your organization.

Go Red

I was privileged to speak at the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women’s Luncheon held on May 1, 2012, at DeSales University. Below is a video of my talk.

I also enjoy teaching through our medical school relationship with the University of South Florida where I serve as a Clinical Professor of Surgery. In addition to having surgical residents and medical students on my service, I have organized many educational symposia, journal clubs, and lectures.

The 44th Annual Meeting of The Pennsylvania Association for Thoracic Surgery

September 28 – October 1, 2006

During the 1990’s, The Annual Update on Heart and Lung Surgery” was one the best attended and most successful surgical symposia in Pennsylvania.

I invited leading heart and lung surgeons from around the country to speak on the latest techniques in heart and lung surgery.  The auditorium was always filled.  In addition, we provided a fabulous evening reception with a buffet dinner, music, and cocktails.

The LVPG Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons hosted a heart and lung surgery symposium on March 19, 2005 shortly after the establishment of our new practice.

The symposium entitled “Lehigh Valley Update on Heart and Lung Surgery” was a tremendous success.  Over 200 physicians and health care professionals attended the lectures.  Close to 400 people attending the gala reception that was held the evening prior at Lehigh Country Club.

Some of the most prominent cardiothoracic surgeons from around the country spoke at our symposium, including Dr. James Cox who developed the Maze Procedure for treating atrial fibrillation.

As President of The Pennsylvania Association for Thoracic Surgery, I was honored to host the 44th Annual Meeting at Lehigh Valley Hospital. It took a year of planning and preparation for this event.

On Thursday evening, September 28, we held the Executive Council meeting and dinner at the Glasbern Inn in Fogelsville.  It was a wonderful evening.  My friend and colleague, Christian Gilbert, gave an emotional presentation on his amazing recovery from a brain tumor.

  • Dr. James McClurken (Temple University School of Medicine)
  • Dr. Sanjay Mehta (Milton S. Hershey Medical Center–Now our Partner at LVH!)
  • Dr. Thomas Whalen (Chair of Surgery, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network)
  • Dr. Richard Edie (Former Chair, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital)
  • Dr. Scott Goldman (Chair, Surgery, Jefferson Main Line Health)
  • Dr. Maryalice Cheney (Lankenau Hospital)

Below is a picture of my going over the financials with our treasurer, Dr. Ron Nutting.  I was a past-treasurer so you could say that Ron and I were “on the same page.”  It’s one of my favorite pictures from the event because it symbolized to me the completion of over 12 months of preparation and planning.

The highlight of the four-day event was the live telecast of four simultaneous state-of-the-art surgical procedures from our operating room to the auditorium where the conference was being held.

All of my surgical partners participated, plus we had world experts scrub in on the cases. It was truly one of the finest live telecasts ever presented at any surgical meeting that I have attended.

I was so proud of the entire team of surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, perfusionists, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and technicians for successfully and professionally performing perfect demonstrations of surgical skill using the most advanced techniques available.  Special thanks to the Olympus Corporation for their extraordinary expertise!

The event concluded with our annual banquet.

In addition to major educational events, I enjoy providing lectures to small groups of physicians, nurses, and hospital staffs from around the region.

I am also available to help other surgeons, medical practices, and hospitals set up symposia, web sites, and lecture series.

Please let me know if you would like me to provide your group or practice with:

  • A lecture on a current topic in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • A lecture on healthcare policy and management.
  • Organize a symposia or lecture series.
  • Speak on a symposium panel, educational panel or tumor board.
  • Debate with legislators, lawyers, or the media on healthcare issues.

Funding is than half the battle when it comes to educational programs.  Indeed, it has become increasingly difficult to gain grants from companies for educational programs.
